Aisle Guard vs. End Guard: Choosing End-of-Row Protection
8:17

The end of a row is the highest-traffic zone in most warehouses — where forklifts turn, reverse, and pass closest to the rack. Two Damotech products guard that zone: the DAMO END GUARD and the DAMO AISLE GUARD. They protect the same area in different ways, so the real question isn’t “which is better” — it’s “which one matches your rack configuration and the frames you’re protecting.” This guide walks you through that decision.

Quick answer: Which end-of-row protector do you need?

  • Choose the DAMO END GUARD for a floor-level barrier at your row ends. It’s a made-to-measure steel guard built from 3/8" angle with 3/8" stiffeners that protects the row end at floor level.
  • Choose the DAMO AISLE GUARD for tunnels, drive-through configurations, and very narrow aisles (VNA). It wraps the frame with a 12"-tall, 1/2"-thick front deflector plus a 6" × 4" × 3/8" side-and-rear angle, protecting the front, side, and rear posts.

Bottom line: configuration usually drives the choice — standard row ends point to the END GUARD; tunnel, drive-through, and VNA frames point to the AISLE GUARD. A Damotech rack expert confirms the right fit for each position when measuring for your quote.

Why the end of a row needs its own protection

A forklift hit at the base of a frame doesn’t stay a cosmetic dent. Impact at the end of a row can bend the post, reduce the frame’s integrity, and turn one damaged bay into a blocked aisle, damaged product, an audit finding, or — in the worst case — a collapse risk. End-of-row positions concentrate that risk because that’s where forklifts accelerate, turn, and run closest to the rack.

Protecting those positions early is far cheaper than repairing or replacing a frame later. Both products below are built for that job.

DAMO END GUARD: floor-level barrier for standard row ends

The DAMO END GUARD is a floor-level, made-to-measure rack guard built from 3/8" structural angle with 3/8" stiffeners for resistance to forks and outriggers. It’s adaptive in length and finish, and it installs as a bolt-on kit with Hilti screw-type anchors — no on-site welding.

It fits well when:

  • Your row ends are standard positions rather than tunnels, drive-through, or very narrow aisles.
  • A floor-level barrier across the row end is the right level of coverage.
  • You want the length (and height) sized to the position.

DAMO AISLE GUARD: frame-post protection for tunnels, drive-through, and VNA

The DAMO AISLE GUARD protects rack frames in high-traffic areas using a 12"-tall, 1/2"-thick front deflector that shields the front post, plus a 6" × 4" × 3/8" angle that guards the side and rear posts. Full-length welds and anchor holes every 12" on center transfer impact energy to the floor. It comes in left, right, or double-side versions and can be notched for custom fits.

Its deflector is chosen to match the configuration:

  • Rounded deflector — for tunnels and drive-through racking.
  • Formed deflector — for very narrow aisles (VNA) and other tight-clearance zones, to protect the post without stealing working aisle.

It fits well when:

  • You’re protecting tunnel, drive-through, or VNA frames.
  • You want coverage wrapped around the front, side, and rear posts.
  • Clearance is tight and the deflector shape matters.

How to choose: three questions

  1. What’s your rack configuration? Standard row ends point to the END GUARD. Tunnels or drive-through racking point to the AISLE GUARD with the rounded deflector. Very narrow aisles point to the AISLE GUARD with the formed deflector.
  2. Floor-level barrier, or frame-post coverage? The END GUARD guards the row end at floor level. The AISLE GUARD’s 12" front deflector plus side/rear angle wraps the front, side, and rear posts.
  3. Are you protecting the run, or specific frames? A made-to-measure barrier across the row end points to the END GUARD. Protection wrapped around the front, side, and rear posts of specific frames points to the AISLE GUARD.

Because racks, traffic patterns, and clearances differ by location, the most reliable way to specify the right guard — and the right deflector — is to have a Damotech rack expert measure your positions when preparing your quote.

What both guards have in common

Whichever you choose, both are:

  • Bolt-on kits, welded at the plant with the necessary anchors included — no welding on site.
  • Made to measure and able to protect virtually any type of rack, including systems that are no longer manufactured.
  • Fast to install — typically in about 15 minutes per unit by your maintenance crew or Damotech’s certified installers, with unloading usually not required.
  • Engineer-tested — tested and approved by professional engineers before joining the product line.
  • Backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty on Damotech protection products.
  • Powder-coated in standard orange, with custom colors or galvanizing available.

Where end-of-row guards fit in a bigger protection plan

End-of-row guards handle one high-risk zone. Column bases, back frames, and building columns need their own protection, and racks that are already damaged need repair rather than guarding. FAQ on end-of-row protection

What’s the difference between the DAMO END GUARD and the DAMO AISLE GUARD?

FAQ arrow

The DAMO END GUARD is a floor-level, made-to-measure barrier of 3/8" angle with 3/8" stiffeners that guards row ends at floor level. The DAMO AISLE GUARD is a frame-post guard for tunnels, drive-through, and very narrow aisles: a 12" front deflector protects the front post while a 6" × 4" × 3/8" angle guards the side and rear posts. In short, the End Guard is a floor-level barrier; the Aisle Guard wraps the frame posts.

Which guard is right for tunnels, drive-through, or very narrow aisles?

FAQ arrow

The DAMO AISLE GUARD. It’s built for those configurations, with a rounded deflector for tunnels and drive-through racking and a formed deflector for very narrow aisles (VNA) and other tight-clearance zones. Standard row ends are usually a better fit for the floor-level DAMO END GUARD.

Do I need end-of-row rack protection?

FAQ arrow

End-of-row positions are among the highest-risk zones in a warehouse because forklifts turn, reverse, and pass closest to the rack there. If those positions show recurring impacts or sit on busy travel paths, guarding them is a low-cost way to reduce damage before it becomes a bent frame or a blocked aisle. Prioritize the busiest positions and any with recurring impact damage.

Do end-of-row guards change my rack’s load capacity?

FAQ arrow

No. These are external protection products — they don’t alter beam spacing or the LARC (Load Application and Rack Configuration) that governs capacity. Keep your load plaques current and visible.

Are end-of-row rack guards required by OSHA?

FAQ arrow

OSHA does not prescribe specific rack guards. It does require employers to identify and abate recognized hazards, and warehousing carries a higher-than-average injury rate. Installing guards in high-impact zones can support hazard mitigation, but requirements vary by jurisdiction, rack type, and facility. Confirm what applies to your site with qualified professionals and local authorities.

Can end-of-row guards be installed without unloading the rack?

FAQ arrow

Usually. Both install as bolt-on kits, typically in about 15 minutes per unit, and unloading is usually not required. Whether unloading is needed depends on the position, product stored, and site conditions, so it’s confirmed when your positions are measured for the quote.

How are Damotech end-of-row guards anchored?

FAQ arrow

The DAMO END GUARD uses Hilti screw-type anchors, with seismic anchors when required by the design. The DAMO AISLE GUARD ships with 3/4" × 7" concrete anchors — four on standard lengths, with more on longer runs — and transfers impact energy to the floor. Anchor count and type are determined by engineering and site conditions.

Can these guards fit older or discontinued racks?

FAQ arrow

Yes. Both are made to measure and can protect virtually any type of rack, including systems that are no longer manufactured.

What warranty comes with Damotech protection products?

FAQ arrow

Damotech protection products carry a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.
