Damotech is North America's largest provider of pallet rack inspections and the only company whose inspections are all performed by an engineer. Our engineers have inspected over 500 million sq. ft. of warehouse space across the U.S. and Canada, including the facilities of 250+ Fortune 500 companies. Whether you run a single warehouse or a nationwide network of distribution centers, our compliance inspection services give you a complete, engineer-certified picture of your racking systems' condition. Each rack inspection report identifies deficiencies by priority, with photos and recommendations, so you can take corrective action and bring your racking back to conformity. Reports and dashboards are accessible through the included Damotech Software Platform, allowing you to track your progress toward a safer warehouse.
Pallet racks must be inspected because employers are legally responsible for workplace safety, and undetected rack damage is a leading cause of structural failures in warehouses. In the U.S., OSHA requires company management to provide a safe workplace to its employees. Canadian regulators, including CNESST in Quebec, WorkSafeBC in British Columbia, and Ontario's Ministry of Labour, impose the same obligation. Putting workers at risk of injury can expose employers to serious liability in case of an accident.
Despite the demands of daily operations, your racking systems must maintain their full structural integrity over time. Our annual pallet rack inspections are always performed by engineers, who certify that your racking complies with local rack design and safety standards.
Damotech is the only rack inspection company in North America where every inspection is performed by an engineer. Our engineers walk your facility and meticulously inspect your racking systems for compliance, collecting on-site information, taking photos, and recording any deficiencies, damage, or missing components. Each inspector holds an engineering degree and completes Damotech's internal certification program, specific to pallet racking, before conducting inspections on their own. Every pallet rack safety inspection follows the same engineer-led methodology, whether we are inspecting a single system or an entire distribution network.
Our pallet rack inspections are non-disruptive to your daily operations. Following our visit, we issue a detailed report with prioritized recommendations. Regardless of your industry, the type of pallet racks you use, or the damage found in your warehouse, we have the expertise and solutions to help you diagnose, report, and address deficiencies.
Most experts and governing bodies, such as OSHA, recommend a yearly independent inspection performed by third-party rack experts or engineers, complemented by monthly assessments by internal warehouse personnel. No regulation prescribes an exact frequency, so the right cadence depends on the velocity of your operations and how quickly rack-related issues arise in your warehouse. High-traffic facilities, cold storage environments, and warehouses with a history of forklift impacts often warrant more frequent independent inspections.
A thorough third-party inspection is highly recommended before an OSHA audit. A Damotech inspection report provides your business with an accurate assessment of the condition of your warehouse pallet racking systems, covering proper installation, unsafe modifications, hazardous damage, and unposted load capacities, and allows you to address issues before OSHA visits.
Non-compliant warehouses can face OSHA fines or be required to temporarily suspend operations, so identifying and correcting deficiencies ahead of an audit protects both your workers and your business continuity.
Damotech engineers perform rack inspections across North America, with no travel-surcharge surprises: geographic location is transparently factored into your quote. Our teams regularly inspect warehouses in and around Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Jersey and the New York metro area, Houston, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Seattle in the United States, and Toronto and the GTA, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg in Canada. We also cover Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Wherever your facilities are, one provider can inspect them all, with consistent methodology, uniform reporting, and a single dashboard.

After a New OEM Pallet Rack Installation
Whether it's your entire warehouse or a small section, a brand-new installation calls for a 3rd party to verify that everything was installed according to engineering specifications and that the rack systems are ready to be put to safe use.
When Launching a Corporate Safety Program
When launching a corporate-wide safety program, you want a baseline inspection performed to assess the condition of the racks at a specific point in time, and to be able to measure your progress towards a safer warehouse environment.
For Annual or Recurring Re-Inspections
An annual, quarterly, or monthly re-inspection of your racks after a baseline inspection has already been conducted. New damage may have occurred. Updating the status of previously reported issues will give a more accurate measure of performance.
When Regulations Require Certified Documentation
Some jurisdictions require an official document stating that racks have been rated, inspected and are safe to use. Ontario requires a PSR (Pre-start Health and Safety Review) signed by an engineer and British Columbia (WorkSafeBC) also requires inspections.
After a Rack Repair or Component Replacement
If your damaged rack was fixed with parts from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or a specialized rack repair kit, you may want to ensure that the rack still meets original specifications and maintains its rated load capacity.
After Reconfiguring or Re-Slotting Your Racking
You changed the layout of your racking systems or changed the height of certain beams? An inspection or certification (LARCS) is required by code before putting the rack systems back into usage.
After a Forklift Impact, Collapse, or Earthquake
Was there a major incident in your warehouse? Whether it was induced by human error like a forklift accident or from a natural cause like an earthquake, you will need to make sure the integrity of your racks have not been compromised.
Before or After a Regulatory or Corporate Audit
Before or after a regulatory or corporate audit, you may need a comprehensive report on the conformity of your pallet rack systems or a document that certifies this. Such a report can be produced promptly after a visit by a rack expert.
Before Buying or Leasing a Warehouse
If you are looking to acquire or lease a warehouse and need to know the current condition of the pallet racks inside the warehouse. This should allow to evaluate the investments involved to bring the racking to conformity if necessary.
To Benchmark Your Internal Inspections
Want to make sure your internal inspections are uniform and up-to-par across one or all of your facilities? Let a 3rd party come in and inspect your racks. Compare the reports, then make an informed decision on appropriate next steps.
To Optimize Rack Safety and Performance
If you need insight on how to increase rack safety and optimize your racks' performance, our engineers can help. They have the know-how to provide expert advice on how to optimize the efficiency of your warehouse operations while keeping the work environment safe for workers.
When Load Capacity Documentation Is Missing
Having up-to-date layouts with associated load capacities is required. Load capacity labels or plaques are also required to be displayed at all times on or near the rack systems to inform warehouse workers of their rated capacity.
Every Damotech inspection report is stamped by an engineer and delivered within 30 days of receipt of the P.O. Each issue is rated by priority level and documented with photos, so your team knows exactly what to address first. The report is available in PDF format, and all its data can be accessed interactively through the Damotech Software Platform.
In the United States and Canada, there are well-defined standards for the safe use of pallet racks in all warehouses. In the U.S., pallet rack design and maintenance are governed by ANSI MH16.1, the rack design standard published by the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) and referenced by the International Building Code, as well as OSHA's general duty requirements. In Canada, the National Building Code references CSA S16 for steel structures, including racks, while several provinces continue to apply CSA A344; WorkSafeBC in British Columbia and Ontario's Ministry of Labour add jurisdiction-specific inspection requirements.
Sorting through the different rack safety standards and regulations can be challenging. At Damotech, we have the expertise to make the entire regulatory process as straightforward as possible. Whether you need a PSR review for Ontario, an OSHA audit preparation, or an engineer-stamped drawing with load capacities for local or municipal permits, Damotech has you covered.
Damotech is the only pallet rack inspection company that includes a software platform with every inspection. The Damotech Platform, available for free in the first year, gives you instant online access to your warehouses' most recent inspection data. The dashboard shares insightful statistics about inspected racking systems, and as reported issues are addressed, you can track your progress toward a safer warehouse.
Customers access a visual warehouse layout with all the recorded data for each rack location. They can view, filter, and sort data by current status or damage priority level, as well as photos taken by Damotech inspectors. By registering for the Premium Version, users can record new issues themselves or even perform their own routine assessments.

A pallet rack inspection is a systematic evaluation of a warehouse racking system's structural condition, performed to identify damage, missing components, and unsafe configurations before they lead to rack failure. During an inspection, a qualified inspector, ideally an engineer, examines every load-bearing component: upright columns, beams, braces, connectors, safety pins, anchors, and footplates, along with load capacity documentation such as LARC drawings and posted capacity labels. Each issue found is documented with photos and rated by severity, so repairs can be prioritized. Most governing bodies, including OSHA, recommend a yearly independent inspection by a third party, complemented by monthly internal assessments by warehouse personnel.
During our rack inspections, a Damotech engineer walks your entire facility and visually inspects all racking systems. The process follows six steps:
There is no clear regulation on the frequency of racking inspections. It often depends on the speed at which rack-related issues accumulate in your warehouse. Although not clearly expressed, most governing bodies like OSHA and MOL recommend yearly independent inspections by a third party and monthly assessments by warehouse personnel.
For more detailed info, read our knowledge base article: How often should warehouse racking be inspected?
Rack inspection requirements in the United States come from a combination of federal OSHA obligations, national design standards, and state or local rules. No single federal regulation prescribes an inspection frequency, but the pieces together create a clear duty to inspect.
OSHA: Under the General Duty Clause, employers must provide a workplace free from recognized hazards, and damaged racking is a recognized hazard. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176 also requires that storage of material not create a hazard. During an audit, OSHA inspectors expect evidence that racking is maintained in safe condition, and documented third-party inspections are the strongest form of that evidence.
ANSI MH16.1 (RMI): The International Building Code references ANSI MH16.1, the rack design standard published by the Rack Manufacturers Institute. It defines how racks must be designed, loaded, maintained, and repaired, and requires that load capacities be posted on or near the rack systems. Damotech is an RMI member and inspects in accordance with this standard.
State and local requirements: States operating their own OSHA plans, such as California (Cal/OSHA), Washington, and Michigan, can impose stricter requirements. Seismic zones add engineering obligations: in California and other high-seismic regions, rack installations and modifications typically require engineer-stamped calculations. Some municipalities also require engineer-stamped drawings with load capacities for permits, which Damotech provides through its load capacity calculation services.
Whether you operate a single warehouse or facilities across multiple states, our engineers provide rack inspections to document your compliance. Request an inspection quote or talk to an expert.
Rack inspection requirements in Canada vary by province, and several jurisdictions impose obligations that go beyond general workplace safety laws. Damotech is headquartered in Quebec and performs rack inspections in every Canadian province, with bilingual engineers and reports available in English and French.
Ontario: A Pre-Start Health and Safety Review (PSR) signed by a professional engineer is required before new or modified racking is put into service. Ontario's Ministry of Labour also expects employers to maintain racking in safe condition, with documented inspections as supporting evidence.
British Columbia: WorkSafeBC requires that storage racks be inspected regularly, that damaged racks be repaired or replaced according to the manufacturer's or engineer's instructions, and that load capacities be posted. WorkSafeBC publishes its own rack inspection checklist, and third-party engineer inspections are the most reliable way to demonstrate compliance.
Quebec: CNESST holds employers responsible for the safe condition of storage equipment under the Act respecting occupational health and safety. Quebec warehouses commonly rely on annual engineer inspections to document conformity, and CNESST's prevention guide on pallet rack safety references engineering oversight throughout.
All provinces: The National Building Code references CSA S16 for the design of steel structures, including racks. Some provinces continue to apply the previous rack design standard, CSA A344, which also defines inspection and maintenance expectations. A Damotech racking inspection assesses your systems against the standard that applies in your jurisdiction.
Whether you operate a single facility in the GTA or distribution centers across the country, our engineers provide rack inspections that meet your province's requirements. Request an inspection quote or talk to an expert.
Yes, but our inspectors do not immediately specify repair solutions as they remain completely independent of the sales process. If you request it, a Damotech representative will gladly help you determine the best solutions to address the reported issues, whether repairing with engineered kits or replacing damaged components with OEM parts.
The cost of a pallet rack inspection depends on the size and location of your facility, the number of bays to inspect, and the type of environment, such as dry versus cold storage.
Since every warehouse is different, Damotech provides made-to-measure quotes rather than fixed pricing. Requesting Premium (versus Standard) Access to the Damotech Platform also affects the final price. If your own staff detects severe damage, it is crucial to take immediate action to prevent injuries or further damage. The affected racking systems should be cordoned off. If unloading can be performed safely, you should do so.
Next, contact Damotech to assess and address the damage adequately. We will evaluate the extent of the damage and recommend adequate solutions such as repair or replacement.
In many cases, damaged columns and struts can be effectively repaired using Damotech repair kits. Rack repair is often more cost-effective, less time-consuming and disruptive to your operations than replacing components with OEM parts. The repair process involves using a lifting jack to remove the damaged portion and installing a repair kit. Damotech-engineered rack repair kits restore the full load capacity of your racks and prevent most future damage to the same location.
