FAQ ABOUT RACK SAFETY PROGRAM

Does OSHA require load capacities?

FAQ arrow
Yes. OSHA refers to the building code, which requires load capacities to be posted, visible, and accurate. During an inspection, OSHA will look for load capacity placards or labels on the racking systems. If they are missing or inaccurate, this will be noted and must be corrected.

How do I know whether to repair or replace a damaged upright?

FAQ arrow
This typically comes with training. Having an engineer or inspector perform an initial inspection helps establish a baseline and allows you to learn from the process. Training on identifying rack issues is also important, and Damotech offers this type of training.

Is there a way to determine rack load capacity without using a specialized professional?

FAQ arrow
No. Online tables provided by OEMs are very basic and do not account for factors such as seismic conditions or beam levels. To determine accurate rack load capacity, a professional engineer must perform the calculations.

Where should I start in the Rack Safety Flywheel?

FAQ arrow

It depends on your situation. One recommended approach is to start with inspections and then move through insight, maintenance, and prevention. However, if you already have trained staff and conduct regular inspections, you may already have a more advanced program in place. In that case, the focus should be on whether all parts of the flywheel are being addressed—such as actionable insights and maintenance programs. The key is investing time, resources, and effort to build momentum and keep the flywheel moving.

Are third-party rack inspections or certifications required in the United States, and how often should they be done?

FAQ arrow
There is no specific requirement that defines inspection frequency. Load capacity certifications were discussed, but OSHA generally views inspection frequency from a broad perspective and depends on the level of activity in your warehouse. Inspection frequency is situational and should be guided by warehouse operations. For additional guidance, Damotech recommends reaching out directly to discuss next steps, whether that involves scheduling an inspection, having a call, or receiving more information.

How much damage is too much before a rack needs to be repaired or replaced?

FAQ arrow
General guidelines exist to help identify racking issues and acceptable tolerances. To learn more, download our Rack Damage Assessment Guide. These guidelines are based on ANSI/RMI, OSHA, and FEM standards. When in doubt, the assistance of a rack professional is recommended.

Do rack baseplates require all four anchors, or are two anchors acceptable?

FAQ arrow
In most situations, four anchors are not necessary. However, you should always refer to your rack’s Load Application and Rack Configuration (LARC) drawings for specific design requirements. Click here to learn more.

Can load capacities be spray-painted directly onto rack beams?

FAQ arrow
There are no specific guidelines that prohibit painting load capacities. However, using printed labels or plaques is strongly recommended because they are more flexible. Load capacity is not tied to a single beam or component—it is related to the overall rack configuration. If beams are moved or removed, load capacity may change, which makes painted capacities impractical. For additional information, contact Damotech’s engineering department.

What is the 1-2-3 rule in rack damage assessment?

FAQ arrow
The 1-2-3 rule is a rule of thumb used to establish the priority for addressing damage on rack columns and braces. Find out more here.

We don’t have in-house resources to manage a rack safety program. Can Damotech help?

FAQ arrow
Yes. Damotech offers a service plan called DAMO CARE, designed to simplify the initiation and management of a company-wide rack safety program.
